English 1020 and 1010 on 2/10

Tonight was a pretty good night in class!  In 1020, we went over "China's Google Web" and chapter 14.  The students began working on their argument essays in class, and the rough draft is due in class on Tuesday.  We will be meeting in 134 for class on Tuesday.

In 1010, we had an interesting class.  We went over "I, Telemarketer" and narration.  Then, we had an activity making up short stories.  We had random titles, themes, settings, and characters on note cards, and the students rolled a die to randomly choose one from each.  The students then created short stories using those elements.  I would say it was a successful activity as the groups were working well together, compromising, and having fun creating stories.

English 1020 and 1010 on 1/27/2011

This was an interesting night.  In English 1020, we went over classification essays, and students began working on a rough draft of it.  The topics to choose from were at the end of chapter 11 and the two writing topics at the end of the reading selection that was due today.  The students had some good discussions going about some of the topic choices.

In English 1010, almost half the class was absent.  A few got in touch with me about illnesses.  I hope all those who are sick get well soon!  We had a comma quiz which cannot be made up, but if the students approach me, they can get a copy of the quiz to use to help study for tests.  We also went over chapters 1 and 2 in the book, and had an in-class writing assignment.  The assignment was to do some pre-writing, and if time, move on to writing, about one of three possible topics from a scholarship contest:
1) What are your educational goals?
2) How will winning this scholarship help me reach my goals?
3) Write about a time when "hard work" paid off.

The writing has to be 250 words or less, and came from http://www.jumpstart-scholarship.net.  I collected what students got finished, so if you missed class, try to get this done over the weekend.  I'm trying to encourage all of you to go out for scholarships!

I hope everyone has a good weekend, and I'll see you next week!

English 1020 and 1010 on January 18

Good evening!  The first day got off to a rocky start as many students had the wrong classroom on their schedules.  From now on, English 1020 at 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays will meet in room 130, and English 1010 at 8:00 PM will meet in room 175.

In both classes, I went over the syllabus tonight and gave a pretest.  A few students were absent or left becuase of the confusion with classrooms.

In English 1020, we started going over chapter 1 in the textbook.  On Thursday, we will finish up chapter 1 and move on.

Tonight's homework:
English 1020:
Review sections 4, 5, and 6 in the handbook and read chapters 1 and 3 in the textbook.

English 1010:
Read sections 4,5, and 6 in the handbook and review chapter 30 in the textbook.

I hope to see you on Thursday!

Welcome!

Welcome all to the first week of classes!  It's great to finally get started, isn't it?  This first week should be fairly simple.  We are just going over the syllabus and are beginning with some grammar lessons.  In the future, this blog will be used to update you on what happened in class and to make sure you know what the homework is for the night.

I hope you enjoy this class, and feel free to come talk to me if you need to!
